ChatGPT for Business:
The Guide
ChatGPT is the most used AI assistant in the world, and in many companies it arrived in daily work faster than IT would have liked. This guide answers the questions founders and teams ask us most: which plan fits, where data protection stands, how good the GPT models really are in comparison, and when it pays to look at alternatives. The benchmarks on this page update automatically every day.
What is ChatGPT today?
ChatGPT is the AI product of OpenAI, the San Francisco company founded in 2015 that kicked off the AI boom with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. The chat window of those days has grown into a complete work ecosystem:
- ChatGPT in the browser and as an app: writing, research, analysis, images, and documents in dialogue.
- Projects and custom GPTs: company knowledge and recurring tasks in prepared workspaces.
- Agent features: ChatGPT increasingly completes multi-step tasks on its own, including operating a browser.
- The API: the GPT models as a building block in your own applications and automations.
The decisive point for companies: ChatGPT is almost always already in the building, because employees know it privately. The question is rarely WHETHER your team uses it, but whether it does so in a clean, GDPR-ready setup.
How good are the GPT models? Today's numbers
Marketing slides age quickly, so the numbers on this page do not come from the vendors. We pull them daily from the independent measurements by Artificial Analysis and convert prices to euros using the ECB reference rate. In the current field, GPT-5.6 Sol ranks number 2 among the frontier models we track every day.
| Model | Vendor | Intelligence index | Price per 1M tokens | Open weights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT-5.6 Sol | OpenAI | 59 | €9.85 | No |
| GPT-5.6 Terra | OpenAI | 55 | €4.92 | No |
| GPT-5.6 Luna | OpenAI | 51 | €1.97 | No |
| Claude Fable 5 | Anthropic | 60 | €17.50 | No |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | 50 | €2.95 | No | |

Plans and data protection: making ChatGPT company-ready
The most important line runs between private accounts and business plans. Your employees' free or Plus accounts are the wrong place for company data: no central administration, no contractual basis. Three routes lead companies to ChatGPT: the Team plan for smaller companies and departments, the Enterprise plan for organizations with SSO, compliance, and governance requirements, and the API for your own applications.
On data protection: in the business plans, company data is not used for training by default according to OpenAI, a data processing agreement is available, and Enterprise customers can now use EU data residency. Your homework remains: sign the DPA, classify data categories, extend your records of processing activities, and give the team clear rules about which data may go into which tool. Skip that, and you do not have a ChatGPT strategy, you have shadow IT.
ChatGPT, Claude, or both?
We work with both worlds every day and measure daily. The pattern that keeps showing: ChatGPT is strong on breadth, the largest ecosystem, images, and the familiar interface your team already knows. Claude plays its strengths on long documents, careful answers, code, and agentic work. Committing to a single model usually costs you quality on the tasks the other one is better at.
Our recommendation for most companies is therefore two-track: route tasks to whichever model fits instead of turning it into a matter of faith. The daily numbers for that decision are in the ChatGPT vs. Claude duel.
Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT for business
What does ChatGPT cost for companies?
Teams use the Team plan (sometimes called Business by OpenAI) with central administration and per-seat billing; larger organizations use the Enterprise plan with SSO, compliance features, and custom pricing. On top of that, the API is billed by the amount of text processed (tokens). Since prices change frequently, the table on this page shows the daily updated blended API prices; subscription prices are on the official OpenAI pricing page.
Can ChatGPT be used in a GDPR-compliant way?
With the business plans yes, with a private free or Plus account in a company context practically no. In Team and Enterprise, company data is not used for training by default according to OpenAI, a data processing agreement is available, and Enterprise customers can now use EU data residency. Your homework remains: sign the DPA, classify data categories, extend your records of processing activities, and give the team clear rules.
Which models power ChatGPT right now?
As of 2026 ChatGPT runs on the GPT-5.6 family: Sol as the strongest model for complex work, Terra as the all-rounder, and Luna as the fast, inexpensive variant. How the family compares to Claude, Gemini, and open models like Kimi K3 is shown by the daily updated numbers on this page and in our AI Leaderboard.
ChatGPT or Claude: which is better for business?
It depends on the tasks. ChatGPT wins on breadth: the largest ecosystem, image features, and the interface your team already knows. Claude is known for long documents, careful answers, code, and agentic work. Many companies do best running both and routing tasks to whichever model fits. Our detailed comparison and the daily duel in the AI Leaderboard help with the decision.
What is the difference between ChatGPT Team and Enterprise?
Team targets smaller companies and departments: fast setup, an admin console, per-seat billing. Enterprise targets larger organizations that need SSO, compliance documentation, extended controls, and EU data residency, with custom pricing. Rule of thumb: if you need central IT governance you end up with Enterprise; if you want to start quickly, Team.
How do I introduce ChatGPT in my company?
The same sequence that works for every AI tool: pick two or three concrete use cases with measurable time savings, equip a pilot team on a business plan, do the data protection homework, start with proven prompts and templates, and decide about the rollout after four to six weeks based on real numbers. If you would rather not build this yourself, we set the system up for you, including the question of which tasks are better served by a different model.
