Claude by Anthropic:
The Business Guide
Claude is one of the most capable AI assistants in the world, and in many companies it is already the workhorse behind writing, analysis, code, and agents. This guide answers the questions founders and teams ask us most: what Claude can do, which model you need, where data protection stands, and how you get from the first test to real production use.
What is Claude?
Claude is the AI model family of the US company Anthropic, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers with a strong focus on reliability and safety. Since its launch in 2023, Claude has grown from a chat assistant into a complete working ecosystem:
- Claude in the browser and as a desktop app: writing, research, documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in dialogue.
- Claude Code: the command line and IDE agent for programming that completes entire tasks on its own.
- The API: Claude as a building block in your own applications, processes, and automations.
- Agents and tools: through the open MCP standard, Claude connects to your systems, from Slack to your own database.
Three strengths make Claude especially valuable in daily business: very large context windows (entire contracts, reports, or codebases in one go), careful and well-reasoned answers, and the ability to work as an agent on multi-step tasks without hand-holding.
The Claude models in 2026: which one for what?
Anthropic offers several model tiers. The trick is not to always pick the strongest one but the right one, which quickly saves 60 to 90 percent of the cost. This is how the family lines up (as of July 2026):
| Model | Character | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5 | The newest flagship of the Claude 5 generation | The hardest analyses, complex agents, difficult coding tasks |
| Opus 4.8 | Very strong workhorse, also available with an extended context window for very long documents | Long contracts and reports, deep reasoning, productive development |
| Sonnet 5 | The all-rounder with a strong price-performance ratio | Everyday writing, customer service, most automations |
| Haiku 4.5 | Fast and inexpensive | High volume: classification, extraction, simple answers |
Pick per task, not per habit: route simple jobs to the small models and reserve the flagships for work where quality visibly pays for itself.
Claude in your company: access and data protection
Four routes lead teams to Claude: the Team and Enterprise plans of claude.ai with central administration, the API for your own applications, Claude Code for engineering teams, and Claude inside cloud platforms such as AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex AI if that is where your IT lives.
On data protection: Claude can be operated with GDPR in mind if you set up the framework properly. Anthropic provides business customers with the contractual basis (data processing agreement), and according to Anthropic, business plan data is not used for training by default. Your homework remains: define data categories, sign the DPA, extend your records of processing activities, and give the team clear rules about which data may enter which tool.
Claude skills: the fastest path to real value
The biggest lever for practical results are Claude skills: small folders with a SKILL.md file that Claude loads automatically whenever a task matches. Instead of prompting from scratch every time, Claude gets proven working methods, from SEO audits and brand voice to finished pitch decks.
We maintain the curated catalog The 50 Best Claude Skills: more than 50 vetted skills in seven categories, free of charge, with an install command and honest source attribution. The catalog is designed as a starter set and carries you all the way to professional level.
Every skill ships as a single downloadable file, works in Claude, Claude Code, and Cowork, and names its original author. Start with three simple ones, keep the order, and share the collection if it saves you an afternoon.
Frequently asked questions about Claude
What is Claude?
Claude is the AI assistant family built by the US company Anthropic. You use Claude in the browser or as a desktop app for writing, analysis, research, and documents, as Claude Code for programming in the terminal or IDE, and through the API inside your own applications. Claude is known for handling long documents well, giving careful answers, and working agentically, meaning it can complete multi-step tasks on its own.
Which Claude models are available right now?
As of 2026 the family consists of the Claude 5 generation with Fable 5 as the newest flagship, the very strong Opus 4.8 (also available with an extended context window for very long documents), the balanced Sonnet 5, and the fast, inexpensive Haiku 4.5. Rule of thumb: Haiku for high volume and simple tasks, Sonnet as the all-rounder, Opus and Fable for the hardest jobs such as complex analysis, code, and agents.
What does Claude cost?
Individuals get a free entry tier plus the paid Pro and Max plans; companies use the Team and Enterprise plans with central administration. The API is billed by the amount of text processed (tokens), at different rates per model. Since prices change, check the official Anthropic pricing page for current numbers before you calculate a business case.
Can Claude be used in a GDPR-compliant way?
Yes, with the right setup. Anthropic offers business customers the contractual basics such as a data processing agreement, and according to Anthropic, business plan data is not used for model training by default. Your side of the work remains: classify your data categories, sign the DPA, add the processing activity to your records, and give the team clear rules about which data may go into which tool. This rollout work is exactly what we help companies with.
What are Claude skills?
A Claude skill is a small folder with a SKILL.md file: instructions and templates that Claude loads automatically whenever a task matches. Skills give Claude repeatable working methods for concrete jobs, from SEO audits to pitch decks. We maintain a curated catalog of more than 50 vetted skills, free of charge and with install instructions, at collectivebrain.de/en/skills.
How do I introduce Claude in my company?
A sequence that works: pick two or three concrete use cases with measurable time savings first, then equip a pilot team (Team plan or API), do the data protection homework, start with curated skills instead of a blank page, and after four to six weeks decide based on real numbers what gets rolled out. If you would rather not build this yourself, we set the system up for you, from tool choice to custom skills.
